Dr. Karl Beutner '71 and his wife, Mary, have challenged fellow alumni and friends of Saint Mary's to match his pledge of $100,000 to the School of Science equipment endowment fund. The Beutners made the generous pledge to encourage contributions to the fund and further the science education of SMC students.
Beutner, a Fairfield physician who is on the School of Science's advisory board, says the equipment fund is essential. "We hope this gift will be the beginning of a significant endowment that will allow for strategic planning for new equipment to meet the need created by ever-changing technology," he says.
The Beutners have three children who have attended the College, Karl '06, Katherine AS '02 and Matt, now a student.
Brother President Ronald Gallagher says the gift demonstrates the commitment that alumni have to ensuring continuing academic achievement. "This gift not only assists our students in reaching their educational goals, it encourages others to provide resources for important technical equipment for the School of Science."
The endowment fund will be used to enhance technical equipment for various departments, including biology, chemistry and physics. Roy Wensley, interim science dean, says Beutner's gift is greatly appreciated and will help the College secure new and used lab equipment.
"Contributions to this fund will enable our faculty to conduct more research and allow our students to expand their scientific knowledge."
Wensley says that in addition to contributing money to the endowment fund, alumni and friends are encouraged to donate equipment to the College. "In-kind donations and gifts are a great resource because they provide greater flexibility to the operating budget for the School of Science."
Recent in-kind donations include a microscope from Dr. Paul Wotowic, an auto sampler for testing chemical compositions from Danica Randall '06 and equipment and chemicals for advanced lab courses and student research from Dr. Gail Brown EMBA '99.
