Moraga, Calif- For the past three seasons one rivalry has dominated the WCLL Division II. Saint Mary’s and UC Santa Cruz have faced each other in the last three championship games and are on track to make it four in a row. Tonight, at 6:00 pm, the two teams meet in what could be a preview of the 2012 league championship game.
Since the Gaels moved into the WCLL Division II before the 2009 season they have only lost three games to league opponents. All three were to UC Santa Cruz. Since that time the Banana Slugs have also only lost three games to league opponents. All three were against Saint Mary’s. In just three years this has become one of the most heated rivalries in the MCLA. Of the six games played between the two squads during this time, three of them have been decided by just one goal including the 2009 WCLL Championship (12-11 UCSC), and the 2011 WCLL Championship (8-7 SMC). The Gaels have a slight advantage in the overall record winning five of nine meetings.
The Slugs (2-4, 2-0) come into tonight’s game trying to snap a three game losing streak against the Gaels. Saint Mary’s (5-2, 0-0), ranked #13 in the nation, are currently riding a 13 game winning streak against WCLL opponents and have won the last two conference titles, both against the Slugs. Face-off is at 6pm on the Saint Mary’s Lacrosse field. As the history of this rivalry has shown, it should be a very exciting game.
