2/2/2011- The Saint Mary’s Men’s Lacrosse team started off the season in convincing fashion, beating the Bulldogs of the Citadel 17-3 in Charleston, SC on Wednesday afternoon.
Attackman Christian Skuce (2g 4a) and Midfielder Jim Castilone (3g 1a) led all scorers followed by Logan Magness (2g 1a), Sean Chacon (2g 1a), Matt Jaber (2g), and Jimmy Karnezis (2g).
Castilone had this to say about the Gael offense: “We were able to move the ball around and get a lot of players involved in the scoring. Our offense was really clicking, hopefully we can continue this for the rest of our trip.”
The defense was led by Sophomore Goalie Andrew Hax, who notched 6 saves with 1 goal against in his first start as a Gael. Long Stick Midfielder Laki Sotiripulos controlled the Bulldogs’ Midfielders as he picked up 11 ground balls and caused 6 turnovers.
Senior Captains Henry Graham (5to 3gb), and Joe Arnold (2to 4gb) anchored a defense that held the Citadel to only one goal in the first half. Saint Mary’s (1-0) controlled the pace of the game from the beginning taking 58 shots, and completing 29 of 35 clearing attempts.
“I'm really excited we played so well in our first game,” Gaels head coach Colin Knightly. “We moved the ball well and scored in transition. We are looking forward to continuing our momentum against SCAD tomorrow night.” The 23rd ranked Gales play #13 SCAD on Thursday night at 7:00 pm in the first meeting between two ranked MCLA Division II teams this year.
