It has been another great year for the intercollegiate athletics program at Saint Mary's. From the men's basketball team's first West coast Conference regular-season title since 1997 to the women's tennis team's second straight invitation to the NCAA tournament, the Gaels continue to turn in stirring performances.
Senior point guard Mickey mcConnell became a household name among fans of college basketball when he hit a thrilling last-second game-winning shot in SMC's big win at Gonzaga. He was named the WCC Player of the Year and represented the Gaels at the national college all-star game. McConnell joined Rob Jones and Matthew Dellavedova as all-WCC honorees.
Senior women's tennis player alex Poorta became the first Gael ever to be invited to play in the singles draw at the NCAA championships. the Dutch standout drew national attention after knocking off the No. 1 player in the nation during the spring season, going undefeated in the WCC and earning league Player of the Year honors.
Overall, five Saint Mary's sports teams finished among the top three in the West Coast Conference — men's basketball, women's basketball, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball — and numerous Gaels earned all-league and academic all-conference honors. for complete information on Gaels athletics: SMCGaels.com.
