Brother Ronald Gallagher, FSC, will be inaugurated next month as Saint Mary's 28th President. The inaugural celebration, focusing on community and core traditions, marks a new era for the College under his leadership. In a vision statement to the College community last November, Brother Ron urged that Saint Mary's explore, renew and deepen its Catholic, Lasallian and liberal arts traditions at every level of the institution. We've spent recent months exploring how to make this magazine more fully reflect those traditions. The result: a new name, an enhanced design, more feature content reflecting our rich academic, literary, religious and cultural heritage, and more ways for you to stay engaged with the College.
Publications commonly acquire new names during their lifetimes. This publication was called The Brickpile and Saint Mary's Today before it became Update. Its new name - SAINT MARY'S - The Magazine of Saint Mary's College of California - more clearly affirms our identity and Catholic tradition. And, Update will live on as the name of a new electronic newsletter for alumni, which will launch later this year. We've made numerous design and content enhancements. The cover page is less cluttered, allowing "Saint Mary's" and cover art to dominate readers' attention. welve additional pages allow for more features (five this issue, including a profile of Carole Swain and the growing role of laity in Lasallian mission), more campus and alumni news, and expanded Gael Glimpses. Renaming the campus and alumni sections The Arcade and The Quad honor memorable features of the Moraga campus. We hope you like these enhancements. Please let us know what you think; we'll publish a representative sampling of your reactions in the November issue.
