- Lysley Tenorio, an associate professor of English and creatve writing, received a 2008 Whiting Writers’ Award. Tenorio, who received the award in New York City on Oct. 29, is one of 10 emerging writers of exceptional talent and promise to receive the prize of $50,000 this year. Read more...
- Rebecca Engle, a performing arts professor at the College since 1983, received a 2009 Kennedy Center National Teaching Artist Grant. The grant, one of seven awarded in the United States each year, will fund Engle's three-week residency in summer 2009 at Artists' Repertory Theatre in Portland, Ore.
- Brian Jersky, Dean of the School of Science, was recently awarded the Stephen B. Hulley Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Methods of Clinical Research by the Training in Clinical Research program at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). Jersky was also promoted to adjunct full professor in Biopharmaceutical Sciences at UCSF.
- Chemistry professor Steven Bachofer was named by the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) in spring 2008 as a co-director of one of five new nationwide Centers for Innovation designed to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. - Gerard Capriulo, Fletcher Jones Professor of Biology and Ocean Science, was chosen as an organizational leader in a special three-day U.S. Environmental Protection Agency workshop in New York City in May 2007 to assess the oceanography, biological condition and overall health of the Long Island Sound Estuary. - Carla Bossard, professor of biology and environmental science, received the California Invasive Plant Council Award for exceptional contributions to invasive plant management and protection of California ecosystems.
- Greg Smith, professor of biology, was appointed to the Anatomic Advisory Board for the University of California Office of the President in 2007. In this role, he serves to develop and oversee state policy regarding the use of human cadavers by UC campuses and associated institutions for anatomic education and research.
- Associate Professor of Mathematics Ben Davis was awarded a visiting scholar position for fall 2008 at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley.
- Mathematics Professor Jim Sauerberg has been named the editor of Minifocus, the publication of the Northern California, Nevada and Hawaii section of the Mathematical Association of America.
- Steve Sloane, professor of political science, published Gold Stripe on a Jackass, a description of his 30-year naval career.
