Accessibility @ SMC
At Saint Mary's College of California we are constantly improving our inclusiveness for students, staff and faculty.
Accessibility is not just about making sure a site or program works properly, but that the greatest number of people have the same access and experience online as well as in the classrooms. To this end we expect our website and the products of those we contract with to meet or exceed the guidelines codified in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.0 level AA. These guidelines go beyond the already federally mandated Section 508 Amendment to the Rehabilitation Act which are the bare minimum requirements for any entity that receives federal funding. The reasons we adhere to WCAG 2.0 level AA are four-fold we want our site to be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.
We use the free WAVE toolbar from www.webaim.org for any obvious coding errors in the HTML and Javascript code. It provides visual cues for problems with alt tags in images, highlights form fields that are disassociated from their labels (radio buttons especially) and points out where contrast ratio issues exist between text and background colors.
Next, we determine if the product/site is navigable using only the keyboard for limited movement and sight disabilities.
We make sure that the product/site is able to convey all usable information without sound for hearing loss disabilities.
Finally, we check for the ability to use the product/site without a screen for sight disabilities using a screen reader such as JAWS and/or Kurzweil 3000.
Any contract with us will include the necessity to meet the guidelines in WCAG 2.0 level AA.
Products/sites that are going to be used on a mobile device, in addition to meeting WCAG 2.0 level AA, must also be navigable with VoiceOver on iOS devices for disabilities.
