School of Extended Education
On May 20, 2005, Saint Mary's trustees decided to end admissions to undergraduate degree programs at the School of Extended Education (SEED). The School of Extended Education is now closed.
Below are the policies and procedures for former SEED students seeking an
extension to the April 30, 2009 degree completion deadline.
Policy
The deadline for SEED students who are attempting to complete all requirements for the bachelor's degree (April 30, 2009) has passed. Students may appeal the deadline and request an extension of time to earn additional credit for the completion of their degree. When an appeal is granted, the final deadline for completing additional requirements is December 31, 2010.
Students who need "core courses" (i.e., courses comprising their major) that are no longer offered by the College will not be considered for an extension.
Students who need the following courses to complete their degree may be eligible for an extension, provided there is sufficient time to earn the remaining credit they need to graduate prior to December 31, 2010:
- courses from their SEED program that are still offered by the College (e.g. Critical Perspectives)
- elective courses or area requirements.
Procedures for students
- Contact the Associate Registrar Craig Means, cmeans@stmarys-ca.edu, to request that he review your file to determine what is needed to complete the requirements for your degree.
- If you are eligible for an extension (i.e. you do not need "core courses" that are no longer offered by Saint Mary's College), review the options below for earning the additional credit you need. If you need academic advising, contact Dr. Penny Washbourn pwashbou@stmarys-ca.edu
- When you have decided how and when you will earn the additional credit you need, submit a Petition for Deadline Extension which includes your plan for completing your remaining degree requirements prior to December 31, 2010.
- Return the completed petition to Craig Means, Associate Registrar, by fax (925-376-8339) or by mail:
Saint Mary's College of California
P.O. Box 4748,
Moraga, CA 94575-4748 - Your petition for an extension will be accepted or rejected based on (1) the acceptability of the courses/exams selected to fulfill remaining degree requirements and (2) the feasibility of the your plan for completing remaining degree requirements prior to December 31, 2010.
- If you are granted an extension, you must contact the Associate Registrar prior to registering for specific courses or exams, to confirm (a) their acceptability and appropriateness to your degree program and (2) whether specific courses or examinations you propose to take are transferable and would fulfill remaining requirements for your degree. (There are many courses available at local colleges and even more online; it is your responsibility to propose specific courses to the Registrar. The Associate Registrar does not seek out courses for you; he only reviews and approves them.)
- It is your responsibility to inform the Associate Registrar about any changes to your plan, realizing that deviations from the plan may result in failure to fulfill remaining degree requirements prior to the deadline of December 31, 2010.
- You must complete remaining degree requirements prior to the deadline of December 31, 2010 (i.e. courses and exams must be completed, not just started before the deadline). There will be no further extensions.
Options for Earning Additional Credit
- Take courses at accredited post-secondary institutions and transfer them to Saint Mary's College in the usual way.
- Take courses through Saint Mary's OCICU program (Online Consortium of Independent Colleges and Universities); for information, contact Grete Stenersen at gsteners@stmarys-ca.edu.
- Take CLEP or DSST examinations. (pdf)
All courses and/or examinations need prior approval from Associate Registrar Craig Means (cmeans@stmarys-ca.edu).
