Active Listening for Work: Listening Up & Listening Down, facilitated by Mary Vradelis
When and Where:
Saturday, January, 9, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Galileo 201
Description:
Good listening skills are essential for successful managers and leaders in a demanding work environment with diverse perspectives. As an employee it is essential to listen to the goals and interests of your supervisors, to do your best possible work. In addition, if you want to bring new ideas or requests to a supervisor, listening skills are an important first step to understanding the issues and concerns that will influence his/her decision. As a manager, good listening skills can help you coach subordinates to be more resourceful, and help them clarify obstacles to their success. And as many good sales people know, the first step of a successful sale is listening to the problems and desires of their customers.
This practicum will provide ears-on practice of Active Listening skills to improve your communication with supervisors, co-workers, and other critical people who affect your ability to succeed. We will discuss when and how to get input; ways to make sure your supervisees feel heard; and strategies to bring requests and ideas to people in power. Together, we will create some real-life situations and practice listening skills to get positive results.
