Through their participation in the Ed.D. Program, students gain the capacity to:
- Diagnose problems within complex institutional settings and propose interventions based on careful analysis and interpretation.
- Identify the consequences of economic, social and environmental injustice and how such injustice is rooted in values, institutional structures and social practices.
- Deepen personal commitment and professional capacity to address through their leadership practice both the damages created by injustice and the causes of injustice.
- Relate philosophical underpinnings of education and their historical antecedents to current approaches to teaching, learning and schooling.
- Diagnose the external environment and internal forces that affect an organization's strategic planning and change management processes.
- Analyze and influence policy development and implementation in organizations and the political system.
- Apply understandings of educational assessment - theory, practice, political influences - to critique current trends in policy and practice.
- Gather and use assessment data effectively for institutional decision-making.
- Apply theories in leadership, organization, management, policy and change to improve practice in organizations and institutions.
- Use quantitative and qualitative research methods in order to plan, conduct and interpret research to solve educational problems.
- Demonstrate an ability to reflect on and challenge one's assumptions, evaluate one's own value system and be open to multiple perspectives.
- Identify one's strengths and areas for further growth as an educational leader and be able to implement a program for ongoing development.
- Demonstrate a high level of skill in careful reading, analysis, critical thinking, interpretation, and communication in both written and oral forms.
- Discern the influence of technology on our way of learning, thinking, organizing systems and on society at large.
- Mobilize individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds in the service of a common vision.
- Utilize the core skills intrinsic to effective leadership, such as interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, team building, etc. in ways that foster an organization's achievement of goals.
- Discern the influence of values on individuals, groups and organizations and develop strategies for creating alignment in the service of the institutional mission.
- Foster learning communities devoted to enhancing the capacity for action of the participating individuals and the community itself.
- Utilize educational research in professional practice and decision-making with a critical-reflective understanding of its values and limits.
- Become an active member of the scientific research community as a consumer and producer of research.
