master of education degree in applied developmental education
This degree builds upon a preliminary Multiple Subject teaching credential completed at Saint Mary’s College Kalmanovitz School of Education. It will enhance classroom teaching skills by virtue of its focus on Montessori curriculum and the developmental approach it takes. Candidates complete core Montessori courses and specialize in Early Childhood or Elementary Education, whichever best fits their personal needs as a teacher. An AMS Early Childhood or Elementary certificate can be obtained with additional coursework.
The Concentration Component classes are offered at our Berkeley location where you will find convenient parking and easy access to BART. Classes held at this location have a significantly reduced tuition. The Research component classes are held at the Saint Mary’s campus and are at the regular tuition rate. Classes are in the evenings and on occasional Saturdays.
Elementary Focus
Credential Component (35 Units)
A Multiple Subject Preliminary Credential completed at Saint Mary’s College School of Education is required.
Concentration Component for Elementary Focus: (6 units) Choose (2)of the following classes:
- MONT 261 - Philosophical Perspectives, 3 units
- MONT 263 - Mathematics, 3 units
- MONT 264 - Language, Reading & Writing, 3 units
- MONT 266 - Study of the Sciences, 3 units
Research Component (9 units)
- EDUC 572 - Research Seminar I, 3 units
- EDUC 582 - Research Seminar II, 3 units
- EDUC 592 - Thesis, 3 units or EDUC 597 Synthesis Project, 3 units
Total: 15 Units
Early Childhood Focus

Note: Passing the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) is required for unconditional acceptance to this graduate degree program and is a prerequisites to EDUC 572 (Research Seminar I). Therefore, all master's degree students are advised to pass the WPE in the first semester of their graduate coursework.
