Candidates in the Reading Leadership Program will do the following:
- Develop skills and knowledge needed to teach comprehension and text analysis;
- Plan and deliver reading instruction based on assessment;
- Learn to align instructional interventions designed for early and intermediate reading levels with assessment results;
- Acquire a professional perspective on various aspects of literacy learning through examination of research and research-based practice;
- Apply theory and practice in field placements involving learners of varying skill levels;
- Articulate the theoretical, research-based foundations for instructional decisions;
- Demonstrate effective instructional practices, intervention models, and strategies in reading and language arts;
- Demonstrate the ability to respect, understand, and teach students who are different from the candidate;
- Demonstrate the ability to assess and evaluate students’ needs, abilities, and achievement by using a variety of measures;
- Develop an in-depth knowledge and experience with reading and language arts curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and
- Gain knowledge and skills in research design and methodology that enable them to understand emerging findings in the field.
