graduate liberal studies
Please note: we are not accepting new students for the fall 2007 term.
The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies is inspired by Cicero, committed to Saint Mary's Lasallian tradition, and rooted in the natural and social sciences, history, philosophy, religion and the arts. The M.A. in Liberal Studies is distinct from other graduate programs, which tend to emphasize academic specialization or narrow career focus. These approaches, while valuable, can limit the adult student's quest for intellectual growth and result in an overly fragmented view of the world. Our small, theme-based seminars are facilitated by seasoned faculty members, focus on dialogue rather than lecture, and give you opportunities to think critically, articulate ideas, defend positions, and analyze and solve problems. In the words of John Dewey, the goal is to "put people in possession of their powers."
Our students are culturally and ethnically diverse and possess a wide range of career and life experiences, including banking and finance, teaching, computer science, homemaking, graphic design, law enforcement, medicine, social work and more. You'll apply your strengthened capacity for ethical inquiry, ability to respond creatively and productively to change, and interdisciplinary problem solving skills to both your personal and professional lives. Graduate Liberal Studies will help you become a lifelong learner and a fully engaged family member, working professional, and citizen of the world.
