advising
The Liberal & Civic Studies advisors are a group of faculty members from various departments across campus who are committed to the Program and especially trained to help Liberal & Civic Studies students make the important academic decisions they are confronted with. Each L&CS student is assigned to one of these advisors (listed below) and generally keeps him/her until graduation.
What do L&CS advisors do? Their primary functions include:
- helping students plan their initial program and subsequently modify it as necessary;
- answering questions about courses, Program procedures, career opportunities, etc.;
- helping students select a minor;
- when necessary, helping students prepare petitions for adjustments in their program;
- helping students assess their growth and development and their progress in the Program;
- helping students prepare for their Senior Assessment (reviewing their portfolio, chairing their interview, etc.)
L&CS advisors are very knowledgeable about the Program. They meet regularly as a group to discuss advising procedures and provide input on the design and operation of the Program. They hold regular office hours and are available on a timely basis to meet with their advisees or talk with them by phone.
L&CS students are required to meet with their advisor at least once each semester to review their progress and discuss their proposed study list. They are encouraged to schedule additional appointments to involve their advisor more fully in their academic decision making. If you are an L&CS student beyond the freshman year and do not have an L&CS advisor, please inform Kathy Porter (631-4447), Deepak Sawhney (631-8155), or one of the advisors listed below.
