Visitors
MFA students work with each faculty writer in their genre as well as with visiting writers. The program features at least one distinguished Writer-in-Residence in each genre for one semester each year and hosts another prominent writer, editor, or agent who meets with students for intensive one-on-one manuscript reviews.
Distinguished Writers-in-Residence 2008-2009
Rusty Morrison (poet in residence) is the author of Whethering, which won the 2004 Colorado Prize for poetry, and the true keeps calm biding its story, winner of the 2007 Sawtooth Prize for Poetry and the Poetry Society of America's Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award. A graduate of the Saint Mary's College of California MFA Program, she a contributing editor for Poetry Flash and co-publisher of Omnidawn.
Katharine Noel (writer in residence, fiction) is the author of Halfway House, a New York Times Editor’s Choice and the winner of the 2006 Kate Chopin Award for fiction, a Ken Book Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and a Rona Jaffe award. She teaches at Stanford University, where she formerly held Wallace Stegner and Truman Capote fellowships.
Eric Puchner (writer in residence, fiction) teaches at Stanford University, where he was a Wallace Stegner and John L’Heureux Fellow. His short stories have appeared in The Chicago Tribune, Zoetrope: All Story, The Missouri Review, Glimmer Train, Best New American Voices 2005, and other journals and anthologies. He has won a Pushcart Prize and the Joseph Henry Jackson Award for his book Music Through the Floor.
Leslie Carol Roberts (writer in residence, nonfiction) is the author of The Entire Earth and Sky: Views on Antarctica; was the world’s first Fulbright Fellow in Antarctic Studies; and has delivered talks and papers on her interdisciplinary work at the Stanford Linear Accelerator, the New Zealand Studies Association (London) and other universities in the U.S. and abroad. Roberts holds an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa and an M.A. from Canterbury and has written hundreds of articles and essays for magazines, newspapers, and literary journals, including the Bellevue Literary Review, the Iowa Review online, the Bangkok Post, the Christian Science Monitor, and the Sydney Morning Herald.
