the online Language placement exam
To register for a course other than level 001 students will be required to take the online language placement exam to determine the appropriate level. The online exam is available in Spanish, French, and German. For all other languages a test will be conducted with a professor during the 1st week of instruction.
- When majoring in the Liberal and Civic Studies Program, students must complete successfully a fourth term of a modern or classical language course (course 4) or its equivalent at Saint Mary's College or another secondary institution.
- Students that place higher than level 003 may satisfy the language requirement by successfully taking a written and oral proficiency exam during the academic year.
- If you intend to study a language different from the one you took in high school and completely new to you, you can enroll in level 001 and do not have to take the placement exam. If you have completed 2 years of language study in high school, and wish to study the same language, you can not place yourself in level 1 courses.
- One year of secondary school language is typically equivalent to one college semester. A student will ordinarily not be allowed credit for any part of language courses 1 through 4 which duplicates courses previously completed in secondary school with a grade of B or better.
