mathematics major requirements
Students wishing to major in mathematics should have a strong interest in the field and 4 years of high school mathematics, including 2 years of algebra, 1 year of geometry, and 1 year of analysis or equivalent. School of Science majors should be particularly alert to the Language Proficiency requirement. Mathematics majors fulfill their Area B Mathematics requirement with the courses required for the major.
The Mathematics Major
- Lower Division
Mathematics 27, 28, 29, 30 - Upper Division
Eight upper division courses, including Math 111-112, Math 150, and Math 193. Math 101 may not be included towards the major.
The Mathematics Major, Computer Science Concentration
A concentration in computer science should be declared by the end of the sophomore year and upon completion of Computer Science 102.
- Lower Division
Mathematics 27, 28, 29, 30; and
Computer Science 21 and 102. - Upper Division
Nine upper division courses, including Math 111-112, Math 150, either Math 128 or Math 140, Computer Science 102, and 2 additional upper division computer science courses.
A candidate for the bachelor of science degree must also either Physics 1, 2 (lab), 3, 4 (lab) and 2 further courses from the following disciplines: biology, chemistry, computer science (except Computer Science 1), and physics; or Chemistry 8-11 and 2 further courses from the same list of disciplines. Students should contact the Mathematics and Computer Science department for descriptions of split majors with mathematics.
