Saint Mary's College views studying abroad as a rewarding educational and cross-cultural experience. It furnishes qualified students the opportunity to participate meaningfully in another culture. Various study abroad options for Saint Mary's students reflect different purposes and different academic commitments.
Doing a Semester Abroad
Formal enrollment for a semester or year abroad is challenging and requires more preparation than a January Term or summer study experience. It allows students to fully immerse themselves in another culture, providing an opportunity for students to improve language skills or gain a better understanding of international relations. Saint Mary's offers several study abroad locations so students can choose a country and university that meets their personal and academic needs.
Final approval for study abroad comes from the International Programs Coordinating Committee. Students who are approved for study abroad may receive academic credit from Saint Mary's College. Students participating in Saint Mary's sponsored programs can also use their Saint Mary's granted financial aid and can maintain on-campus housing lottery privileges. The Center for International Programs has more information on other scholarships for study abroad as well as overseas work opportunities and overseas volunteer programs.
