NOLA 2006: multimedia presentations
In words, tears and vivid images, 24 Saint Mary's students described their experiences performing hurricane relief work in New Orleans during January Term. All downloads are .mov files.
- "Gulf Coast Devastation" (Team Hardcore)
Some of the simplest statements that we heard in interviews best described all that we experienced in New Orleans. Even though we felt great sadness over much of what we witnessed, we also got to feel an overwhelming sense of hope as well.
[Download] - "One Bag at a Time" (Team JAMBE)
Team member Mallory Lee arrived in New Orleans with a blank canvas bag. As we moved through the month, she slowly documented our activities using markers on that bag. We think it provides a happy overview of all that we did in NOLA.
[Download] - "Returning Home" (Team Amazing)
In music, words, and pictures, we try to capture the experience of what it is like to re-enter New Orleans after "the storm."
[Download] - "Cleansing Katrina" (Team Hi-Viz)
We learned that the word "Katrina" comes from the Greek word for "to cleanse." We look at the various ways that the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina might be seen as a cleansing time for New Orleans.
[Download] - "Faith Isn't Faith Until It's All You're Hanging Onto" (Team Hoorah)
Throughout our time in New Orleans, we kept finding very prominent symbols of religious faith within the debris piles. As we talked to the people there, we found that their faith was often their only source of strength in this crisis.
[Download] - "Colors" (Team Hoorah)
When we arrived in New Orleans, we noticed that things looked pretty gray and bleak. Our brightly-painted bus stood out against the landscape, and made us take a closer lood at the colors that we saw.
[Download] - "Hands Across the Bayou" (Team Amazing)
Our class was called "Bridges to the Bayou." We noticed that we used our hands differently than usual while we were in New Orleans. By focusing our cameras on our hands and what they were doing, we think we can teach a lot about the needs of the Gulf Coast.
[Download] - "Footprints" (Team Hardcore)
Like Team Amazing in their "hands" project, we noticed that we were leaving unique footprints on New Orleans, both literally and metaphorically. We followed those footprints to see where they led.
[Download] - "Lost in the Storm" (Team JAMBE)
As we cleared houses, we took almost every possession inside and deposited on the curb. As we looked more closely, we started to realize that individual items scattered throughout the debris told very poignant stories.
[Download] - "Life After Katrina" (Team Hoorah)
Our camp was a short ferry-ride from downtown New Orleans, an area that is substantially less damaged than other areas of the city. Here we look at parts of the city that are still standing, then move outward to acknowledge others that are not.
[Download] - "NOLA Cribs" (Team Amazing)
Our living conditions in New Orleans were a story in themselves. This takeoff on the MTV show "Cribs" provides a tour of our space.
[Download] - "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" (Team Hardcore)
Using the various perspectives of the five members of our work team, this project explores our hopes, expectations, dreams, and disappointments.
