2008: Changing Perspectives
Welcome to Jan Term 2008! Once again our students, staff, and faculty rallied to express their preferences for the theme that will help guide us as we plan and implement one of the most distinctive features of the Saint Mary's experience: Jan Term. Well over 600 members of our community indicated their theme preferences with explanations for their selections. Over one-half favored "Changing Perspectives" with rationales that are both varied and intriguing. Some registered frustration that more detail concerning theme definitions was not provided; what did the Jan Term Committee mean by...? Your reflections about theme possibilities are really central to Jan Term. Your input helps all see things in new and different ways.
"Changing Perspectives" garnered a host of interpretations. What better way to celebrate the educational experience at Saint Mary's? A faculty member remarked that the "essence of education is the impetus to have each of us reconsider and change our perspectives". In line with this notion, many see "Changing Perspectives" to encompass all aspects of our mission; some mentioned the Lasallian idea of positive social change in particular. Others were quick to point out that this theme captures the very heart of Jan Term. One student wrote: "I think it is good to challenge our perspectives... and Jan Term is the perfect time to do that. It is a chance to move outside of your major, your state, your country in order to expand your view of the world and yourself". Also, let us explore "how to change perspectives, not just expose ourselves to other perspectives". "What about climate, ethnic, and technological change." Several student remarks suggest the thought provoking potential of our theme: "I feel like helping others to expand their views will help us unite in the end." "Change is part of all our lives and when bad things happen we may just need a change of perspective to see the good that will come out of it."
Please join in the spirit of Jan Term. "Changing Perspectives" is meant to enliven our educational experience through innovative courses and events. This is our community's opportunity to stretch, stimulate, and explore.
