The Federal Stafford Loan
The Federal Stafford Loan is available to all graduate students. Full time graduate students on the trimester calendar must complete a minimum of 6 credits per term with a 2.0 GPA to remain eligible for loans.
The subsidized Stafford Loan is awarded on the basis of financial need up to $5,500 per year for teaching credential students and $8,500 per year for graduate students. The federal government pays the interest on the loan as long as you are enrolled on at least a half-time basis.
The unsubsidized Stafford Loan is awarded to students who do not qualify, in whole or in part, for the subsidized Stafford Loan. Teaching credential students can borrow up to $10,500 per year, minus any subsidized Stafford loans received. Graduate students can borrow up to $18,500 per year, minus any subsidized Stafford loans received. Interest is not paid by the federal government at any time
The Graduate PLUS Loan
The Graduate PLUS Loan is available to all graduate students.
The Graduate PLUS Loan is awarded to students who are enrolled at least half-time in a degree program. You must use all of your Federal Stafford Loan eligibility before receiving the PLUS Loan. You must also show credit worthiness to receive this loan. Eligible graduate students can borrow the difference between their educational costs and any financial assistance being received. Students with creditworthy cosigners may borrow up to cost for the year less any other aid being received.
