Graduation Year: 2002
Original Hometown: Walnut Creek, CA
Major/Minor: Anthropology and Sociology
Job Title: Photographer
What is your job description?
I own my own photography business and specialize in natural lighting and ‘documentary’ type photos. I shoot a lot in other countries, as well as for magazines in this country. I also shoot weddings and portraits.
Why did you originally choose Saint Mary’s?
It is beautiful and I love the small classes. I didn’t want to be just another number at a big university – I wanted to become friends with my professors and establish a relationship with them that I can rely on after graduation.
What was the best part about your college experience?
Because of the size of Saint Mary’s I was able to connect with friends on a deeper level. I keep in touch with so many people from SMC! Having lasting relationships with people has been the most wonderful thing – especially when starting your own business.
How did you enter the field you have chosen?
I took art classes at SMC and a visual anthropology class. It was through that class that I became interested in photography. My passion grew and my love of other cultures was nourished in the anthropology department. I am still very connected to my professors at SMC and they often refer jobs to me, as well as invite me to speak in their classes.
How might Saint Mary’s have given you the concrete skills necessary to become successful in your career?
Through the seminar program at SMC I was able to gain confidence speaking – and articulating my thoughts. My reasoning skills really developed and I can’t think of a better skill to have post-graduation. Being that it is a Liberal Arts College, you really get to learn a lot about many different fields. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this… I got to know myself better, thus picking a wonderful career for myself!
What is your advice to students about to enter college?
Absorb as much as you can, and get involved with clubs, etc. Meet and connect with as many people as possible. These people will be your connections later! Also, it isn’t necessary to pick a major right away – it is extremely useful to take beginner classes in different disciplines. You might be surprised with how interested you are in a particular class!
