Your frequently asked questions, answered.
When is the application deadline?
The deadline for applications is January 31st.
Is the GRE required for admission?
Can I attend the program part-time?
No. You can defer your studies or take a leave of absence by filing a Petition for Special Action, but it's not guaranteed that your petition will be granted.
Do you have a low-residency option?
How often are classes held?
Classes are held 2 or 3 days a week, depending on the semester.
What sort of career paths do graduates usually take? Does the M.F.A. degree allow me to teach at the college level?
Our graduates work in education, professional writing, graphic design, advertising, public relations and publishing, and some graduates write full-time. The M.F.A. is a terminal degree, but significant publication and previous teaching experience are also required to secure tenure-track positions at the college level. We offer teaching fellowships and internships to better prepare our graduates for this aspect of their careers. We also offer internships in publishing, public relations, and technical writing.
Am I required to choose a genre at the time of application? Can I switch genres after enrollment?
Applicants must declare a genre upon application; you may, however, apply in more than one genre. A separate application and fee is required for each application. You cannot switch genres after admission under any circumstances, but you can take Seminar courses in genres other than your own.
Can I take workshops outside of my genre?
My undergraduate major wasn’t English. Is that okay?
Yes. Our students come to the program with degrees in various disciplines, including anthropology, art history, English, geology, political science, and psychology.
Is graduate housing available?
The MFA Program has access to a limited number of rooms available in one of the campus dormitories. Contact us for more details.
Is there an interview process?
Can I visit classes?
Prospective and accepted students may visit seminar courses, but not workshops. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
