instructions for phone calls
When speaking with students keep the following techniques in mind:
- Be informed . The only bad answer is the wrong answer! Try to avoid having a student correct you. You don't need to know everything about SMC, simply refer questions back to the Admissions Office at (800) 800-4SMC.
- Be personal. Use first names and ask about nicknames.
- Be descriptive. Use illustrative words when describing programs, clubs, etc. Avoid using Saint Mary's lingo or acronyms, it may seem obvious to you but they won't have a clue!
- Smile. Smiling is one of the major training points for national telephone-based corporations. If you are physically smiling, it comes across in enthusiasm and voice intonation.
