Alumnus of the Year – Jim Guyette ‘67
James M. Guyette is President and Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce North America Inc. (RRNA). In this role, Guyette oversees all Rolls-Royce companies and business units in North America encompassing more than 7,700 people at more than 70 locations throughout the US and Canada. Guyette is an executive director on the Rolls-Royce North American Holdings board. He also serves on the boards of Rolls-Royce plc and IAE. He joined Rolls-Royce in 1997.
Previously, Guyette enjoyed a long and successful career with United Airlines. In his 28 years with the carrier, Guyette held a wide range of increasingly senior positions giving him unparalleled breadth and depth into all facets of airline management. Most recently, he was Executive Vice President - Marketing and Planning, responsible for all marketing, sales, fleet and route planning and scheduling. Before this, he was Executive Vice President - Operations, accountable for all aspects of the airline's daily operations. He also served as Assistant to the Chairman of the Board. Additionally, Guyette was an integral part of the team that designed, developed and launched the Boeing 777 -- for which he earned the Aviation Week & Space Technology Laurels Award.
Guyette is a director of priceline.com, Norwalk, CT and the Private Bank and Trust Co., Chicago, IL. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. He is also a member of the Board of Governors for the Flight Safety Foundation, the Aerospace Industries Association and the Board of Directors of The Wings Club. He is a former member of the National Research Council Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board. He also serves on the National Board of Advisors for the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, IN.
Guyette has served on the Saint Mary’s Board of Regents for more than 20 years, and he is a lifetime member of the President’s Club. Over the years he has contributed generously to the Guyette Family Scholarship to help deserving students. He graduated from the college 1967 and has two sons who are also SMC alumni.
Signum Fidei - Rick Reviglio ‘88
He has been an integral figure in raising more than $500,000 for the SMC Northern Nevada Endowed Scholarship. Rick’s parents Jack and Ro Reviglio, along with Ed and Agnes McCaffery, and Jim and Mary Ellen Bahan helped build the Northern Nevada Endowed Scholarship so that Northern Nevada High School Students could have the opportunity to attend Saint Mary’s College. Rick’s company, Western Nevada Supply, is one of the most generous supporters of Reno area philanthropy in the state of Nevada.
Rick has been honored by the University of Reno for athletic support, and has received prestigious awards from the Nevada Policy Research Institute. Each year Rick, his father and their company coordinate efforts with their customers to take hundreds of underprivileged kids to go Christmas shopping. They support the Boys and Girls Club, the Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, and countless other organizations.
In addition to all of his generous work, Rick spearheaded a $35 million dollar campaign to build a new campus for Bishop Minoque Catholic High School in Reno.
Honorary Alumnus – Brother Dominic Berardelli FSC
Brother Dominic Berardelli was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He entered the Christian Brothers IN 1955 immediately after graduation for Central Catholic High School, a Christian Brothers’ high school. He spent his Novitiate in Ammendale, Maryland (1955-56) and his Scholasticate in Elkins Park, Philadelphia where he graduated from La Salle College with a Bachelor’s Degree in History (1959) and a Master’s Degree in Theology (1960). He taught one year in Arlington, Virginia before going to the Philippines. In 2002 he received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from the Universidad La Salle in Obregon, Sonora, Mexico for his work in the Pacific Asia Region.
He has been assigned to many different lands and works. Brother spent ten years in the Philippines, where he made his final profession in 1963 with five Filipino Brothers. He taught at De La Salle University and La Salle Green Hills in Manila and in Iligan, Mindanao. He was Principal of the Grade School at La Salle Green Hills for six years and of the High School for one year. He returned to the States 1971 and was assigned to the San Francisco Province of Brothers. He taught religion at La Salle High School in Pasadena for seven years, was Associate Superintendent for Elementary Schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for one year and then became the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the newly formed Diocese of Orange County.
From 1980 – 86 he was Director of Education and Finance for the Province of Brothers. In 1986 he was asked by Brother John Johnston, Superior General, to go to Rome and was assigned to the Mission Office of the Brothers’ Generalate, where he worked for eight years. His specific responsibility was for the care of and assistance to the Brothers in the Pacific Asia Region, with particular attention to sectors which were under stressful and challenging situations. He also was appointed by the Brother Superior General to be Delegate for Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and India in which capacity he served for ten years.
After his assignment in Rome, he served at Saint Mary’s College as Special Assistant to the President and worked in the Advancement Office from 1994 - 2001. After a year of sabbatical he was assigned and worked for several years at De La Salle North Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon. He returned to Saint Mary’s College at the invitation of Brother Ronald Gallagher, President, in 2005 and has served as Director of Parent Relations, as a Major Gift Officer, and now is back to his previous work as Special Assistant to the President.
John Bapist De la Salle Award – Shawny Anderson Ph.D.
Shawny Anderson was born and raised in Madison, Indiana, a historic town in the Ohio River Valley. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Speech Communication from Ball State University and her Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Cultural Studies from Purdue University.
While an undergraduate, she received a teaching fellowship that allowed her to teach her first college-level course as a senior at Ball State. Throughout her time as a graduate student, she participated in a prison education program in the state of Indiana, helping to found a Communication degree for the inmates of the Indiana Women’s Prison. On top of her graduate work, she also toured the Midwest in a rock band from 1990-1995.
Upon completion of her doctorate, she took her first full-time faculty position at Loyola University Chicago. There she was the Director of the Basic Course and she established her focus in the area of Communication and Social Justice.
After she arrived at Saint Mary’s, Shawny was a co-founder of the Justice and Community Minor and a co-author of the Academic Honor Code. She continued her prison education focus by teaching at San Quentin, the California Women’s Prison, and California State Prison – Solano.
Her January Term classes have included two travel courses to Brazil and two trips to participate in hurricane relief in New Orleans after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She is currently planning her third Jan Term in the Gulf Coast. Over the course of two January Terms and two break weeks, Shawny and her students have completed over 10,000 hours of manual labor in support of hurricane relief efforts.
Shawny is currently the Associate Dean of the School of Liberal Arts. In that position she has been instrumental in the Dante Hall Mural Project, January Term planning, revision of new student orientation, oversight of the Irvine Scholars program, and acquisition of the American Association of Colleges and Universities Walk the Talk grant to increase campus dialogue and overall commitment to personal and social responsibility.
Certificate of Merit – Jim Wood ‘70
Jim, a native of Oakland, is the son of Don and Helen Wood. Don was a graduate of SMC ('46) and was SMC Alumnus of the Year in 1998. A classroom in the new school of education building will be named in honor of Don and Helen. His brother Dennis graduated from SMC in 1971 and his brother Matthew Graduated in 1978. While attending SMC Jim studied in the Integral (nee Integrated) program but also received a good amount of his education while working in the SPAN movement (that eventually led to the admission of women a year after he graduated). He was also active in the Viet Nam anti-war movement with a good many students and faculty. He then attended the University of San Francisco School of Law and received his J.D. Degree in 1973. After working for the Alameda County Superior Court he joined the Oakland firm Crosby Heafey Roach and May where he became a litigator specializing in the defense of manufacturers of prescription medicines. In 1997 Crosby Heafey merged with the now 1500 international law firm Reed Smith. In 2006 Jim was named as the winner of Reed Smith's annual Sean Halpin Award for outstanding pro bono accomplishments. A recipient is selected annually by the Reed Smith Pro Bono Committee from nominees who have made significant pro bono or other community service contributions during the previous year. The same year, he was named Attorney of the Year by the AIDS Legal Referral Panel. He lives in Berkeley with his wife Cynthia and his step-daughter Alexandra. He is the father of Nathan, Ruth and Sarah all of whom live in the East Bay.
Jim was the key figure in planning the Brother Mel Roast last year which raised more than $100,000 for the Brother Mel Endowed Scholarship.
GOLD Award – Jim Sciuto ‘00
Jim Sciuto was born in 1978 in Northridge, CA, the youngest of four children. He attended Campbell High School in North Hollywood and made his way to Saint Mary’s in 1996. While at SMC, Jim majored in English with a History minor. He is currently in his final year of the Master’s in Organization and Leadership at USF. Jim started his illustrious career at SMC as a resident advisor in Mitty Hall for 2 years. Upon graduating he worked in that Student Activities & Leadership Programs as Graduate Assistant while he was receiving his teaching credential. The time he spent as a grad assistant motivated him to alter his career path from teaching to work in higher education. In 2004 Jim became the Assistant Director of Student Activities and Leadership Programs, and then was promoted to Associate Director of Residence and Community Life in the summer of 2005. Since his graduation in 2000 Jim has chosen to live among the students and serve as a resident director in Sabatte and Guerrieri East Halls. Jim has twice been voted Staff Member of the Year by the 2002 and 2005 senior classes. Jim is passionate about working with students. Specifically in advising the Program Board, ASSMC, clubs, and Peer Council. Jim also values his work with the Brothers through residence life.
