River of Words (ROW) joins the Kalmanovitz School of Education Family

The international environmental poetry and art program, River of Words (ROW), has joined the Kalmanovitz School of Education family. The program, under the leadership of its co-founder, Pamela Michael, will be housed in the new Center for Environmental Literacy (CEL) located in Filippi Academic Hall, Rm. 250-2. River of Words is internationally recognized for its unique pedogogic model that integrates science, art and poetry in a place-based K-12 curriculum. Since 1995, River of Words has encouraged young people to explore and savor the watersheds where they live and trained educators to guide them with inspiration and passion. Through professional development and other educational services, traveling exhibits, publications and community programs, ROW reaches thousands of educators and young people around the world. ROW was co-founded in 1995 by Michael and then-US Poet Laureate (and SMC alum) Robert Hass. One of the program's most noteworthy events, conducted in affiliation with The Library of Congress Center for the Book, is a free, annual international poetry and art contest for children in kindergarten through twelfth grade. ROW has donated their collection of children's art-the largest in the world-to Saint Mary's Hearst Art Gallery, which will exhibit the work and make it available for scholarly research. There are many opportunities available for SMC faculty to collaborate with this innovative and dynamic program through the Center for Environmental Literacy. Please drop by to introduce yourself to Pamela and her staff and also seek to learn more about her work with K-12 teachers and students by visiting their website at River of Words. .

Saint Mary's College of California American Marketing Association Club wins two awards!

Saint Mary's College of California American Marketing Association Club wins two awards at the 2011 International Collegiate Conference The AMA, otherwise known as the American Marketing Association recently announced the recipients of the 33rd annual AMA International Collegiate Conference Awards. We are proud to announce that Saint Mary's College was honored with two awards at this year's ceremony. In only its third year of operation, Saint Mary's Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association won the Outstanding Communications award and was one of this year's distinguished finalists for its Outstanding Marketing Week Activities. Professor Larisa Genin founded SMCAMA in 2008. The group works on campus to provide workshops, seminars and other various informational events for any students interested in careers in marketing. SMCAMA chooses one theme to focus on each month and creates events, which feature industry professionals who speak on topics tailored specifically to that month's theme. In the past, these themes have included everything from sports marketing, with the Vice President of the San Francisco Giants as a guest speaker, to events focusing on dinner etiquette and its important role in networking. SMCAMA's current president is Kelly Fisher. She spoke candidly about what this national recognition meant for SMC's flourishing AMA chapter. "Receiving the Outstanding Communications award really demonstrated how hard the executive board members worked to make SMCAMA an even better association, capable of effectively bringing together professionals and students for the Saint Mary's community." "Being apart of SMCAMA since its initiation, I have seen it grow and develop into a wonderful association. The executive board members are engaged and treat it like a real company. Knowing that AMA National recognizes this shows that even a small school can make an impact."
