mary in art: then & now
MORAGA -- The Hearst Art Gallery at Saint Mary's College is currently showing depictions of the Madonna. "Mary," on view through Sunday, April 27, 1997, includes more than 60 artworks, from historic, sacred paintings and sculptures in the Saint Mary's College collection to more avant garde interpretations by contemporary Bay Area artists representing a wide variety of media.
Examples of historic works include a 16th century carved wooden madonna by the Master of Ulm, Germany, a late 18th century Greek Orthodox icon, and early 20th century prints by modern French masters Emile Bernard and Georges Rouault.
Among the contemporary artists whose works are on view are painters Elanor Dickenson, Rupert Garcia, Roy Schmaltz and Audrey Welch, sculptor Joe Sam and photographer Jo Whaley.
A related event, "Mary in Art: Then and Now," co-sponsored by the College's Collegiate Seminar Program, will offer slide presentations of early Italian renaissance painting by Gallery Education Coordinator Heidi Donner and contemporary art from the exhibition by curator Marvin A. Schenck, Wednesday, April 16, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Soda Activity Center. The Gallery will be open from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. Event admission is free.
A brochure and images of several works in the exhibition are available.
