ruth bernhard: master artist tribute iv
"....the greatest photographer of the nude." (Ansel Adams)
"Ruth Bernhard photographs the nude more sensitively than any photographer I know of. She has developed a superb technique for the expression of this difficult subject." (Berenice Abbott)
MORAGA -- The Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College will honor Ruth Bernhard as its fourth Master Artist during a retrospective exhibition, opening Sunday, Nov. 17, and continuing through Sunday, Dec. 22.
Nearly 60 gelatin silver prints spanning the artist's career and showcasing her extraordinary nudes and remarkable still-lifes will be on view.
Ruth Bernhard, one of the most distinguished photographers living today, believes people should "fall madly in love with the world." Her images have inspired and influenced generations of artists. Born in Berlin in 1905, she pursued her photographic career in New York and Hollywood before settling in San Francisco in 1953. She has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and Mexico. In her 92nd year, Bernhard continues to teach master classes in photography, lecture, work on exhibitions here and abroad, and collaborate on future book projects, as well as the establishment of her archives at Princeton University.
Ruth Bernhard: The Eternal Body, a stunning collection of fifty nudes, was published in 1986 and reprinted in 1994. Her most recent book, Gift of the Commonplace, the first comprehensive treatment of her work in still-life photography, was published this year.
