Saint Mary's Advances to the Round of Sixteen

April 5, 2009--The Saint Mary's Gaels defeated University of Washington and a determined UC Davis team in the 2009 PRFUC Playoffs. With the win over Washington and Davis comes a #3 Pacific Coast Seed in the National Championship tournament in Atlanta, GA on April 18th.
4/4-Saturday, the Gaels faced a very determined University of Washington team. The Huskies would hold the Gaels to 24-3 at the half. With some great breakaways led by Matt Hensely, the Gaels were able to win by a margin of 50-3 at the final whistle.
4/5-On Sunday, Saint Mary's faced an inspired UC Davis squad. Davis drew first blood putting up a try in the first half. Saint Mary's lock, Kyle Batten, answered with try for the Gaels in the first period.
The match progressed in gut-wrenching fashion as Davis continued a relentless pursuit of victory. As the end of regulation time neared, UC Davis put in the penalty conversion to tie the game at 25-25.
With overtime slated in two ten minutes halves, the only score in overtime was a goal line pick and go try by Kyle Batten. In the end, Saint Mary's won by an uncomfortably narrow margin- a score of 30-25.
The Gaels will now travel to Atlanta, GA to play in the USA Rugby National Championship Round of Sixteen- Pool D hosted by Life University.
