Jeffery Bleich, the U.S. Ambassador to Australia, visited Saint Mary's College on Dec. 30 to greet many of the Aussie student-athletes who compete on Gael basketball teams. Bleich arrived at McKeon Pavilion just after the men's team completed its "shoot-around" and chatted with all the players at lunch. Bleich asked each player about his or her home town, and he was familiar with most of the communities. Bleich also met privately with Brother President Ron Gallagher and discussed a wide range of issues. Later in the day, the ambassador met with the Center for International Programs to learn more about the College's outreach to Australia and the services it provides for international students at SMC and SMC students who study abroad in that country. Bleich, who was appointed ambassador by President Barack Obama in 2009, was in the Bay Area to celebrate the holidays with his family.
