Who: Betty DeGeneres is the mother of actress, comedienne, and Emmy Award-winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Thrust into the spotlight when her daughter very publicly came out of the closet, DeGeneres quickly became one of the strongest and most visible advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender civil rights. During her talk, DeGeneres promotes personal and societal acceptance and understanding regardless of sexual orientation and identity. She offers a moving insight into her life as Ellen's mother while promoting education, compassion, and justice for alternative lifestyles.
DeGeneres is the Human Rights Campaign's first heterosexual spokesperson for its Coming Out Project and the author of two books: Love, Ellen: A Mother/Daughter Journey and Just a Mom. Her appearance is presented by the Saint Mary's College Social Justice Speakers Series as part of LGBTQIA Awareness Week.
