In a game that made history, the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team claimed the WCC Championship on Monday night with a heart-stopping 78-74 victory over Gonzaga in overtime. The win gives them the tournament title and the regular-season title in the same season for the first time in SMC history.
Junior guard Matthew Dellavedova, the WCC Player of the Year, was named tournament MVP. Dellavedova, with 22 points, and senior forward Rob Jones, with 18 points, provided strong leadership throughout the game. In a nail-biter of a matchup, the Gaels set the pace in the second half, but Gonzaga's Elias Harris scored with a long three-pointer with 3.7 seconds left in regulation play to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Gaels played excellent defense, hit all six of their foul shots in the final 40 seconds and beat the Zags for the second time in three matchups this season.
