At Saint Mary’s College, students spend a great deal of time discussing important political, social, and moral issues. In fact, your discussions are going to start right away!
We are pleased to announce that the topic for the 2007 Saint Mary’s College New Student Summer Reading Program is: “Global Climate Change.”
This year, climate scientists around the world for the first time are saying that global warming is “unequivocal” and that humans are “very likely” causing most of the increase in Earth temperatures since 1950. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that in coming years, temperatures will consistently rise but that fast action could mitigate the damage. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says that at its core, the environmental crisis is a moral challenge.
We, the Deans of the School of Science, the School of Economics and Business Administration, and the School of Liberal Arts, have chosen an original reading by each of these organizations in order to inform our new students about the scientific, economic, and moral dimensions of global warming.
