Saint Mary's College hosted the first U.S. senatorial debate between incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer and Republican challenger Carly Fiorina on Sept. 1 in LeFevre Theatre. The debate was sponsored by KTVU Channel 2 News, the San Francisco Chronicle and KQED Public Radio, and was broadcast live on KTVU. "As a College with a Great Books curriculum, we are committed to serious conversations about critical issues and ideas," said Brother President Ronald Gallagher.
Saint Mary's is one of the country's best 373 institutions for undergraduate education in the 2011 edition of the Prince-ton Review. Only about 15 percent of the 2,500 four-year colleges in the United States are profiled in the college guide. SMC was also among the Princeton Review's 120 "Best in the West" colleges.
SMC was ranked No. 26 on Washington Monthly's 2010 master's universities rankings for contributing to the public good in recruiting and graduating low-income students, producing cutting-edge scholarship and encouraging service to the country.
The third Mission Assembly of the San Francisco District of the De La Salle Institute took place on campus in early August. About 85 people from district offices and schools discussed many topics with this year's theme of "accessibility of our educational apostolates to students from families whose income is at or near the poverty level."
