For the first time in three decades, a major review of the general education program at Saint Mary’s is underway. A Core Curriculum Task Force is reviewing the curriculum while looking at “best practices” across the nation. The task force is holding forums on campus and plans to visit programs and departments through the 2006-07 year to see what’s working and what’s not.

Hisham H. Ahmed, an expert on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, joined SMC’s faculty in fall 2006 after teaching from 1994 to 2006 at Birzeit University in Palestine. Ahmed, born in the Deheisheh Refugee Camp near Bethlehem, is author of From Religious Salvation to Political Transformation: The Rise of Hamas in Palestinian Society.

Professor Robert Gardner ’69 has been made an affiliated member of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the highest honor the order bestows on individuals who, in outstanding ways, embody the mission and join the Brothers in supporting their educational calling to students.

Integral tutor Denis Kelly’s new cookbook, Williams Sonoma Essentials of Grilling, is out in bookstores and available online. Kelly has written a number of cookbooks, and has won both the Julia Child and the James Beard cookbook awards.

Professor Carol Lashof is working as librettist with British composer James McCarthy on a chamber opera about Virginia Woolf.

Professor Paolo Sensi-Isolani and Lisa Pieraccini ’88 organized and curated the exhibit “Planting Roots, Reaping the Harvest” about Italian immigrants’ contributions to the Napa/Sonoma wine industry at Fort Mason’s Museo ItaloAmericano. It runs until Jan. 28.
