MFA Professor Lysley Tenorio received a 2008 Whiting Award at a ceremony on Oct. 29 in New York City. The coveted $50,000 prizes recognize 10 young writers and have been given annually since 1985. Past recipients include Michael Cunningham, Mary Karr, Tobias Wolff and Jeffrey Eugenides. Tenorio recently completed a collection of short stories, some of which have appeared in The Atlantic and The Chicago Tribune. He writes mainly about first-generation Filipino immigrants in California.

Rebecca Engle, a performing arts professor at the College since 1983, received one of five Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival awards for the western United States. This regional award was given in appreciation of Engle’s reputation and achievements as a teacher and artist.

Senior political science major Skylar Covich was named to the National Federation of the Blind’s Board of Directors for the San Francisco region. Covich, who is president of the SMC Democrats, has also received NFB merit scholarships.

During the week of Oct. 12, the College’s Cummins Institute hosted Montini Fellows Melanie Morey and Father John Piderit, S.J., authors of Catholic Higher Education: A Culture in Crisis. The institute created the Montini Fellows program to honor individuals who have contributed to Catholic higher education and to promote discussion of the Catholic intellectual tradition.

The new B.A. in Leadership and Organizational Studies

began recruiting new students last fall through a series of open houses and promotion in regional media. The degree program, which is a hybrid program combining online learning with in-person cohort sessions, caters to working adults who can earn a degree in as few as 24 months with transfer credit.

More than 60 Saint Mary’s alumni returned to campus on Oct. 15 to talk with students about jobs in more than 20 career fields including finance, law enforcement and medicine. The annual “Dine with Alums” event drew more than 150 students, who listened to an address by Chris McClure ’94, managing director at Lincoln Financial Advisors in San Ramon. Six students from the School of Science represented Saint Mary’s by presenting research at the annual conference of international science honors society Sigma Xi in Washington D.C. from November 20–23. The students were Mikhael Poblete, Kyle Pounder, Lori Scognamillo, Winifred Scott, Chris Snead and Stefanie Wang.

Political journalists from local media outlets provided post-election analysis at a Nov. 10 session in the Soda Center. The panel included SMC political science professor Steve Sloane, Marc Sandalow from KCBS, Carla Marinucci from the San Francisco Chronicle and Lisa Vorderbrueggen from the Contra Costa Times. Father Mike Russo moderated the panel.
