The College hosted Education USA advisors for the first week of June. The advisors were sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and were from Vietnam, India, Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Croatia, Morocco, Hungary and Turkey. Their mission is to assist international students in finding a school that will meet their educational needs for undergraduate and graduate studies. Along with touring Saint Mary’s, they also visited several other Bay Area colleges.

Professor Ron Olowin arranged for Saint Mary’s to join the ALFALFA consortium, a working group comprised of scientists and students from more than 30 institutions led by astronomers Riccardo Giovanelli and Martha Haynes of Cornell University. The project is mapping a large area of the sky at radio wavelengths appropriate for the detection of neutral hydrogen gas (HI) in other galaxies and is expected to detect more than 30,000 galaxies out to a distance of 750 million light years.
