Presidential historian Richard Reeves, author of influential biographies of John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, discussed the 2008 presidential campaign at the Soda Center on Oct. 8. A former New York Times chief political correspondent, Reeves is senior lecturer at USC’s Annenberg School of Communication.

On Oct. 2, a Blue Mass was celebrated in the Chapel to honor first responders in Contra Costa and Alameda counties. More than 150 firefighters, police and ambulance personnel gathered for the Mass celebrated by Bishop Emeritus John S. Cummins, followed by a nondenominational ceremony honoring colleagues who have fallen in the line of duty. Alumni who have served or are serving as first responders in any jurisdiction were also at the service.

Saint Mary’s was included in the 2008 edition of The Best 368 Colleges, published by the Princeton Review, a New York–based education services company known for its test-prep courses. Only about 15 percent of America’s 2,500 four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges are in the book.

The annual James L. Hagerty Memorial Lecture was held on Sept. 13 in the Soda Center. Brother William Beatie of the Philosophy Department spoke about the legacy of Baron von Hugel, a late 19th- and early 20th-century Catholic philosopher known for his studies of religious feeling.

A new Transglobal Executive MBA program has started at Saint Mary’s, offering professionals the opportunity to acquire strong analytical and managerial skills that are necessary to operate in the global economy.

Shyam Kamath, the executive director of the program and a professor of global business, says that Saint Mary’s program is unique because it takes the College’s Lasallian mission and applies it to business by emphasizing economic and social justice.
