Capital Public Radio Interviews SMC's Steve Woolpert About New Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León
Capital Public Radio interviewed Saint Mary's School of Liberal Arts Dean Steve Woolpert about the election of California State Senator Kevin de León as the new Senate President pro Tempore or "Pro Tem." Woolpert, a political science professor, spoke with state government reporter Max Pringle about the powerful position de León will occupy as the state's first Latino Pro Tem since the nineteenth century. While Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom serves as the official senate president, by law and custom, his role is limited. The actual leader of the senate is the Pro Tem, who also serves as the chair of the Rule Committee. Listen to the Capital Public Radio report. De León, the parent of an SMC student, was also the focus of the Los Angeles Times article "Setback put Kevin de León on the path to Senate leadership."
