Here are some well thought words from students just like you!
Wandering into the career center at Saint Mary’s was my first step to entering the job world. I had no idea who to talk to but the helpful staff set me up with a wonderful woman named Paula. Over the course of several days I worked one-on-one with Paula Conrad to perfect a resume that started out as barely more than my name. Her endless knowledge of internships and job opportunities make the career center an invaluable asset to every Saint Mary’s student. After my time in the career center I feel confident about my resume and know that it will help open doors for me in the oncoming year. It is never too early to start planning for your future, and the career center is the place to make it happen. -Veronica Illes 14'
The Career Center has been a wonderfulplace for me. Everyone has beencourteous and helpful and really care about students. My Career Counselor Vicki, was a wonderful help to me. Our personalities matched and I felt that she cared about me and gained enough information about me to know what career fields/ options, would work best for me. She told me about an internship that I would be good at and introduced me to a representative from Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. The representative explained the internship to me and told me about the narrow margin of students that are accepted. There are about 15,000 Applications that are received in the United States. From that they narrow it down to 100 possible California applicants, and from there 20 students are accepted in California. there are about 2-4 interns per specific region(s). I am happy to say that I was accepted because my career counselor believed I was a good fit. After my 3 month internship ended and learning the mortgage business, I was offered a full time position and am currently a Jr. Home Mortgage Consultant, in which I specialize in Renovation. If it were not for the Career Center and my Career Counselor I would not be in this position. I recommend that all students go the Career Center, before they are seniors, because an internship as a freshman might just be that full time position you receive after you graduate. - Joseph (Joe) Brown 12’
Like most seniors, I began the year with my mind buzzing about what I would do after graduation. I knew that the job market was tough, and every newspaper cover page was full of the latest unemployment statistics. However, determined to find a job, I decided to go to the Saint Mary’s career fair and attend their career seminars. During these events, I gained a lot of valuable information regarding how to research companies, how to present yourself during an interview, and even the questions I should ask the companies before and during the interviews. After searching the list of available internships, I found a few that seemed like something I would enjoy, and one day I saw a new posting for an internship with Chevron as a Business Analyst. I knew that this is an industry I was interested in, and felt as though this internship was my chance to experience working for a high-profile company and possibly obtain a position after graduate school. I wanted this internship, and was determined to find a way to get it. I emailed the career center and received an immediate email explaining the selection and interview process, as well as the contact information for Paula Conrad, the internship coordinator. I arranged a meeting with Paula, and she helped me tailor my resume to fit the job description and offered advice about the interview itself. After several hours researching the position and rehearsing my thoughts, I sat in the interview room trying to remember what I had learned. To my delight, the interview went longer than the allotted time, and the next day I received an offer for the internship! This internship was a great experience, as it presented an opportunity to experience working in a corporation first hand, as well as guidance in my business and networking skills. As a result of this experience, I would highly recommend the career center, the services they offer and the positions they have available. -Parker Childress 12'
