The Micah Summer Fellowship Program is designed to allow current Saint Mary’s undergraduate students the opportunity to experience faith, service, and community in the example of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. This is an immersion living/learning program designed to advance each student’s professional development, leadership development, and growing awareness of important social issues. The Micah Summer Fellows will be positively changed through learning and serving and as a result become agents for positive social change.
Four qualified (2nd, 3rd or 4th year student during 2012-2013 academic year, 3.0 GPA, previous service & leadership experience) Saint Mary’s students will apply to and be selected to participate in the Micah Summer Fellowship Program. Each student will serve for 8 weeks (June 1st - July 27th) at a Bay Area community organization that promotes the common good. Students’ service will be varied based on their placements. Some will work directly with homeless and marginally housed individuals to help provide access to basic needs such as food, shelter, jobs, and health care. Others will work directly with staff and citizens to plan and implement campaigns to end homelessness, advocate for access to health care, neighborhood safety, employment, and education. The students service will directly or indirectly empower and benefit those who are economically disadvantaged and in need of the above items.
Fellows will live together in an Oakland apartment and engage in a community night twice a week. During this time, they will discuss readings, journals, projects, and a final paper. A CILSA staff member coordinates and facilitates the Micah Fellowship experience, maintaining regular contact with the Fellows and community partners. Fellows are expected to devote 40 hours each week and are not allowed to engage in any other employment during the fellowship period. Because the fellowship experience may impinge upon students’ ability to earn money during the summer to pay for school expenses in the fall, each fellow will receive a $2,000 service award upon completion.
