The Center for Writing Across the Curriculum has hosted one "Palooza" per semester since Spring of 2013. These fun, themed writing events are held in collaboration with the SMC Honors Program to give students a chance to come together and enjoy writing in a relaxed environment.
The Edgar Allan Poe-looza
On November 11, 2014, we celebrated the Halloween spirit with our Edgar Allan Poe-looza. Students enjoyed Poe-themed games, and the night was rife with Poe puns. As always, duck decorating was a popular activity. Our raffle winners got to take home a hardcover copy of a collection of Poe's works.
The Mad Tea Party Palooza
On April 28th, 2014, CWAC hosted the "Mad Tea Party Palooza." While this event did not coincide with a film release, the whimsical world of Wonderland was a fun setting. Students came and decorated their own mugs, while enjoying delicious desserts and classy tea.
The Hobbit Palooza
The Hobbit Palooza celebrated the release of the second installment of the Hobbit films: the Desolation of Smaug. "Second breakfast" was enjoyed by all while students used golden moleskine notebooks to record their writing adventures.
The Great Gatsby Palooza
On May 1, 2013, CWAC hosted the first SMC Writing Palooza in collaboration with the Honors Program! Guests were encouraged to wear a Gatsby inspired outfit and bring their thinking caps. This event commemorated the release of Baz Luhrmann's version of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio by revisiting the classic novel with themed writing games. Activities included food, mocktails, and various writing games. In addition, we held a raffle. Raffle winners chose between movie tickets or copies of the book. Everyone had a jazzy time!
