The Theology & Religious Studies Department is pleased to announce a public lecture by Professor Tom Poundstone on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 7:30 - 9  p.m. in the Moraga Room, Soda Center.

Tom will discuss the challenge of capturing both a Markan and a Johannine image of the crucifixion in the same work of art and consider how changing depictions of the crucifixion over the centuries reflect a variety of ways of appropriating the meaning of the cross. In addition, he will assess where the artistic and theological trajectory -- which has images of victory in the fifth century to images of atonement in the sixteenth -- might be going today. Works to be discussed  include: Caspar David Friederich's "Morning in the Riesengeberge," Nikolaï Nikolaevitch Gay's "Calvery," Marc Chagall's "White Crucifixion," Otto Dix's "War Triptych," Salvador Dali's "Christ of Saint John of the Cross, Richard Wagner's "Menorah," and Stephen Cox's reredos for St Paul's Church in Haringay, England.
