Christian Brother Honored for International Leadership by Saint Mary's College of California
MORAGA, Calif. (April 25, 2007) - Saint Mary's College of California has granted an honorary doctorate in educational leadership to Brother Gerard Rummery, FSC, in honor of his Lasallian service across the world over the past 60 years.
During the College Convocation, Saint Mary"s President Brother Ronald Gallagher praised Rummery as a man of "abundant faith and zeal" for inspiring the college community through his work with the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies and the Lasallian Leadership Institute.
Rummery, a native of Australia, is one of the mostly respected authorities in the world on the subject of catechesis. He has worked at the Lasallian International Center in Rome and served on the General Council of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, responsible for oversight of the Pacific-Asia region and central Europe.
In a keynote address, Rummery recounted numerous stories of Christian Brothers "moved with pity" to carry on the teaching traditions of Saint John Baptist de La Salle all over the world. He spoke particularly of Brothers who carried on the mission of De La Salle even when confronted with persecution during wartime and under communist rule in Europe.
"It's an important story that really hasn't been told," said Rummery.
