For it is in giving that we receive.” – Saint Francis of Assisi
There’s a reason why most people shop at the mall, or online at Target.com. It’s a habit not easily broken – especially during the holiday season. But there’s a push this week to buy gifts at Saint Mary’s, where your dollars help support the College.
Consider the SMC Bookstore, both on campus and online. While few students would like to find one of their spring semester textbooks under the tree, they may like a quarter-zip sweatshirt – something that manager Jason Butler says is ‘flying off the shelf’. Other top picks include literary art tees for women and religious gifts like rosaries, bibles and crosses.
The SMC Bookstore is open through December 20 and has 25% off select sweatshirts and sweatpants through December 14.
More eclectic offerings can be found at the Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art, where each purchase comes with a gift bag. The showcases are filled with jewelry and notecards and hairclips and more. Hot picks include the blown glass by Berkeley artist Michael Sosin, Andy Warhol’s gift-wrapped Christmas books for Tiffany’s, Tohono O’odham baskets from Arizona and Mata Ortiz pottery from Mexico.
Campus Community Sale Day at the Museum is this Tuesday, December 10, where most items will be 25 percent off. CCA professor emeritus Richard Gayton’s watercolors and prints by River of Words award-winning student artists and Pam Glover will be 10% off.
The gift of Gaels sports is a home run, year-round, but especially during the holidays. Director of Ticket Operations Blake Huckaby says Mens basketball is the hot item right now and the faculty discount can be used on up to four tickets at a time. Womens home games are free for faculty and staff. Other entertainment offerings include SMC concerts, plays and ballet.
Lastly, consider the gift that really keeps giving – a donation to Saint Mary’s College. The opportunities are as close as your computer keyboard.
