SMC v. SJSU 03/02/14
On Sunday, March 2nd, the Women’s Club Soccer team went head to head with the SJSU Spartans. About 35 minutes into the game, the Spartans claimed their first goal and second goal less than 10 minutes later. Like the warriors they are, the Gaels did not give up and kept fighting, strengthening their defense and offense, which earned them a goal, shot by Elise Dreiling, #7. After reenergizing during the break, the Gaels came back even stronger and more determined to defeat the opponents. The team claimed two more goals, one shot by Jackie Escobar, #17, and the other shot by Lauren McQuiston, #3. Despite the Spartans tying up the game 3-3 with another goal and injuries to both teams, the Gaels proved their worth on the field and played well. Go Gaels!
SMC v. UC Davis 02/23/14
This past weekend, our lady Gaels played against UC Davis. During the first half Davis scored one goal and during the end of the second half, they scored again ending the game at 0-2.Considering that UC Davis is undefeated and has been beating teams 6-0 and 9-0, the team only played their best and just couldn't come out with the win.
SMC v. UCSC 02/16/14
The women's club soccer team traveled to Santa Cruz to play the Banana Slugs. With UC Santa Cruz scoring early to take the lead, it was a battle trying to tie it up. The girls had a couple of good opportunities, but came up short. One of which was Lauren McQuiston's free kick which hit off the post. Two minutes before the half Natalya Ferdinandi scored off of Elise Dreiling's pass in the 18 yard box. At the start of the second half Natalya Ferdinandi dribbles down the right flank and scores again for Saint Mary's to take the lead. Unfortunately, the Gaels could not hold the lead and lost 3-2, with the Banana Slugs scoring two more goals off of corner kicks.
SMC v. USF 9/7/13
The Gael’s started the season on a glorious day at Negoesco Stadium. Courtney de Leon, Annie Wenzlau and Renee Barbour started the game in their debut season as Saint Mary’s began brightly dominating the early possession. After thirty minutes the Gaels pressure paid dividends. Amelia Salazar broke from defense and found Griffin Cullen with a beautifully weighted pass down the right. Cullen whipped in a cross and found Daniella Aiello at the far post who finished neatly on the volley. USF were able to apply pressure late in the first half which the Gaels did well to hold off without conceding.
After the break Saint Mary’s started well and before long they had doubled their lead. Salazar again joined in the attack and her shot from distance ricocheted on the crossbar and keeper before falling in for a 2-0 lead. As the game entered the last twenty minutes the game was put beyond doubt with another Aiello goal. Jackie Escobar made the run down the right and managed to retain possession when it looks like the chance had gone. She swung in a cross for Daniella to finish again at the far post. The Gaels saw out the dying minutes of the game without incident to come away with the win and the points.
