Four major road and pipeline projects scheduled for this summer will likely impact some aspect of your commute to Saint Mary’s.
- The East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD) will be doing major pipeline repairs along Moraga Road this summer, which will involve the closure of a portion of Moraga Road from Old Jones Road to Sky-Hy Drive. The EBMUD project is scheduled for June 16 through August 9.
- The city of Lafayette will be doing a paving project on Mt. Diablo Boulevard
- The city of Orinda will be paving a portion of Moraga Way from Camino Encinas to Ivy Drive and
- The town of Moraga will be completing a median and signalization project from Moraga Road at Ascot Drive.
The Moraga Road pipeline project is the most extensive of these four repairs. Work will begin on Moraga Road between Sky-Hy Drive and Draeger Drive, where two-way traffic will be maintained except for in a few sections. Work hours will be weekdays between 8:45 am and 4:30 pm, with some exceptions.
Specifically, the narrow portion of Moraga Road from Nemea Lane in Lafayette to just north of Sky-Hy Drive in Moraga will require closure of Moraga Road between Old Jonas Hill Road and Sky-Hy Drive weekdays from June 16 to August 22, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The intersection at Rheem Blvd. will be completed in one weekend with 24-hour work hours.
Any traffic problems can be a headache, especially during the hot summer. Here are some suggestions that could make your commute less aggravating:
- Plan your vacation around the construction. During the 1984 Olympics, thousand of Los Angeles residents left the city and most believe the traffic never flowed better than during the three-week games.
- Look to carpooling. As gasoline prices approach $4 a gallon, carpooling takes more cars off the road and saves money.
- Explore possible flex time hours with your supervisor.
