Oakland is a city with an eclectic history. It is the birthplace of such diverse entities as the Black Panther Party, Kaiser Permanente and Sly & the Family Stone. It's also the home of many of the East Bay's major professional sports teams, including the Oakland Athletics and the Golden State Warriors. You can go kayaking on Lake Merritt, take the ferry from Jack London Square to San Francisco, take in a show at the Paramount Theater, or go hiking and camping in one of the many regional and state parks in the Oakland hills.
