The Composition sequence of English 3, 4, and 5 provides students with writing skills and strategies they will use throughout their years at Saint Mary's.
The Writing Requirement
All Saint Mary’s freshmen (except those enrolled in Integral) take an English class during their first semester. Placement in English courses is determined by entrance exam scores (i.e. SAT, AP, or IB scores, but check with the Director of Composition, as these may be subject to change) or by results of the Writing Placement Exam during Orientation. The Director of Composition will email you if you are required to take the Writing Placement Exam. Completion of both English 4 and 5 is required for graduation and is typically completed during the first year of college. For some students, completion of English 3 will be a prerequisite for English 4. Students in the Honors Program whose test scores exempt them from English 4 may choose to take Honors English 5 in the fall.
Students wishing to challenge or confirm their automatic placement may take the Writing Placement Exam while on campus for Orientation. Although anyone may take the placement test, we usually recommend it only to those students who feel their test scores do not accurately reflect their essay-writing abilities.
If you wish to take the placement test, please send an email to the Director of Composition (firstname.lastname@example.org) indicating your desire to take the test and which Orientation session you will attend.
