Jeanne Woodford, Executive Director, Death Penalty Focus

Jeanne Woodford is the Executive Director of Death Penalty Focus, a nonprofit anti-death penalty group. She is the former Director of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She served as the first female warden of San Quentin State Prison, and was responsible for the execution of four men during her tenure there.

Phillip Stirling, Deputy District Attorney, Los Angeles County

Over the course of his career, Phillip Stirling has tried over 40 special circumstance murder cases, including six cases in which his office was seeking the death penalty. He has obtained five death verdicts. He has also served on the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Death Penalty Committee, where potential death cases are evaluated.

Moderated by Ralph Spinelli, Saint Mary's College Jan Term instructor and MFA program alumnus. His forthcoming book Prison as Punishment will be released by Oxford University Press in winter, 2012.
